When was the last time you had a physical? 🏃♂️
A physical is not something that occurs when you book with your doctor for a specific concern. In fact, it is possible that you have never had a physical if you or your doctor have not ordered one yet. Depending on your age, this may not be unusual; however, anyone over 40 should be booking an appointment with their physician for a full physical/wellness check. You doctor can recommend how often you should get one moving forward. A physical is about prevention. Finding an issue as it slowly moves into an undesirable range is much easier to correct than treating it once it has started visibly altering your health status.
The most common cancers that occur in males are
lung cancer, skin cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer. Early screening and intervention can prevent the progression of many of these. It is important to talk about, know your family history, and get screened starting as early as age 40, depending
on your level of risk.
Men’s Mental Health 🧠
The state of male mental health in Canada was reaching a crisis point even before the COVID-19 pandemic. Men are less likely to talk about their mental health and often have fewer supports in place to receive appropriate intervention. Fear of judgement or to be seen as weak is also a barrier for men to seek help when they are struggling. It could also be suggested that many of the resources available may not be appealing to male personality types.
Make Some Man Friends 😎💁♂️
The best people to understand what you are going through are those who are or have also experienced similar obstacles. Making friends, talking about your frustrations and fears, and simply being open to listening to theirs, can be remarkably therapeutic and comforting. You don’t even need to talk; having a person you trust in times of crisis can relieve much of the mental load you may encounter.
🗣📲☎️ Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
Speak to a family member, a friend, a therapist, a physician, or another professional you trust.
