If Your Skin Was a Mattress... Part 2

Updated: Apr 2, 2023

Today, we are going to focus on the mattress springs (aka our collagen). Our collagen needs to be properly maintained in order to stay healthy. This includes providing the fuel needed to rebuild as well as an environment conducive to healthy growth, such as hydration around each ‘spring’ and protection from external factors, like sun or wind damage.

Collagen can be found almost everywhere in our bodies. Our hair, skin, and nails are comprised of collagen; but you can also find it in our muscles, tendons, and joints. The point is, we don’t just need collagen to look more youthful; we need it to feel our best, remain strong, heal quickly, and enjoy a pain-free lifestyle.

Now let’s talk about anti-aging. 🤨🧐

Imagine a firm, plump, brand new mattress. This is like our young skin. We often don’t have to maintain it as much because our collagen is always regenerating and re-plumping - even with very little self-care. But after some time, you notice that your mattress is beginning to sag and has lost some of its vital shape and plumpness. Much like the springs of your mattress, your collagen is also prone to breaking down, with similar aesthetic effects. As we age, our bodies stop producing collagen (and this happens in our mid-twenties….yikes!).

The best way to treat this is:

1) use a high quality collagen supplement (more on this in our May issue of Utopia Wellness Magazine!).

2) use product that targets the layer of skin that houses our collagen, the 5th layer (in the dermis). These are usually serums, oils, and concentrates.

3) ensure that the product is engineered to support collagen regeneration and long-term health, such as a protein rejuvenator (retinols and alternatives) or a deep hydrator (hyaluronic acid). Combinations of these types of products are extra beneficial! 🌟

Tune in to our next post on winter skin care to learn more about hydration vs. moisture, how they are different, and what you can do to maintain both. 🥰❤️
