They left on high hopes with their rifles in hand • Bound for adventure to unknown lands • Thrust into massacre, madness, and pain • Compelled to kill those only different in name • Tearing out life and extinguishing souls •
Bright eyes transforming from boys' into ghouls. • Many came back but their head stayed behind. • That long looping memory that eats at the mind. • A shell of what was, is, and could be. • Nightmarish memoirs and uneasy dreams. • For war does not end when the final bomb drops. • And war does not end when the fighting all stops. • War does not end when the troops make it home. • And war does not end when politicians say so. • In fact, one could say, that war is forever; • For those who bear witness are not the same, ever. • We must remember the pain and the loss • Suffered long after the battle's called off. • In the dark, quiet passageways deep in the mind •
That seemingly only grow darker with time • Lest we forget their pain and despair; • To give us our peace, they sacrificed theirs.
