1. The backpack should be proportionately sized to the child, with wide, well-padded straps and padded back.
2. Look for compartments - this distributes the weight more evenly.
3. Place heavy items close to the spine/body and at the bottom of the bag.
4. Use the waist strap to disperse the weight off the shoulders.
5. Keep things light. A backpack should not weigh more than 10-15% of the child's weight. If they can stand upright comfortably, they're probably good. If they're hunched over, lighten their load.
6. Tighten shoulder straps and wear them on both shoulders.
7. Lift the pack safely by taking a knee or bending at the knees.
8. Check your backpack regularly and empty unnecessary items often.
