hile it is not exactly a perfect scientific model, it was one of the most helpful analogies I learned about skin care in my early years in the industry, and it has stuck with me ever since.
If we compare our skin to a mattress:
- The top layers of fabric and padding would be the superficial layer of skin (the epidermis).
- The springs would be the dermis, which houses your collagen, elastin, oil glands and hair follicles.
- The thick, rigid layer on the bottom of the mattress would be the fat-rich hypodermis, which acts to provide some structure, cushioning, and stability, amongst other things.
- Beneath the mattress is the box spring, which provides firm structure and support to the layers above - these are our muscles and bones.
These components work together to create a youthful, lifted, plumped appearance; however, they must be treated differently to achieve optimal results. Not only do you want to consider product to treat targeted conditions, such as hyperpigmentation, but you also need to ensure that it is going to reach the layer of skin that you need it to (i.e.using a serum vs a moisturizer).
Stay tuned this week as we dive into skin hydration during this brutally dry cold snap. 🥶
