February Local Business Feature! 🚨❤️
Meet Heena & Michael Mak, local chefs, entrepreneurs, and owners of the @brownbuttercafe.
These two lovebirds met one faithful day in culinary arts school. It was a big change for both; something they had thought of doing for a long time but had never taken the leap until that year. Clearly, their timing was impeccable! They were both big believers in connecting with others through food.
Michael grew up in a small town where his dad owned a Chinese restaurant. It was the only one there and, naturally, it became more than a place to eat. It was a place to gather, to catch up, and simply to enjoy good company. It became a place where everyone knew each other. They became friends and, eventually, family. Michael saw how his dad’s cooking, and the environment he created, brought people together no matter what their differences. He saw how talking and laughing over a good meal brightened people and changed their day. He has always known that he would continue to follow in his father’s footsteps and do what he has always done.
As for Heena, she had a similar experience on a smaller scale. She always enjoyed helping her mom with cooking but was afraid of doing anything by herself because she was young. One day, she made Asian inspired pasta for her dad all in her own. She was proud of the dish, but it was the look on her father‘s face after taking his first bite that she knew her heart was set on cooking. That nervous yet warm and joyful feeling is something she cherishes to this day.
A word for the owners:
“When we first met, we instantly connected because we had this love in common. Food for us was a tool to cultivate a connection, a community. After one too many classes and a whole lot of time spent together, here we are! ☺️ We believe that food and drink is an essential part of everyone’s life. Not only as an necessity to survive, it is more than that. It is what brings people together, what opens them up. Yes, we love cooking and creating our own dish, but what we love the most is getting to know you. We hope you feel the same!” -Heena & Michael
